Chapter 12

“Where is she?” Sydney asked frantically.

Jacob, standing next to the nurse’s desk in the waiting area of the emergency room, looked her up and down. “Jesus Christ Sydney, what kind of outfit is that?”

“I just got off work.” Sydney said impatiently. “Jacob, where is Emma?”

“She’s fine. They just put a cast on her finally. We’ve been here since goddamn eight o’clock.” Jacob grumbled.

“I want to see her.” Sydney demanded as Grayson took her cold hand in his and squeezed it gently.

“She’s in the back.” He glanced at Grayson. “I think it should just be family Sydney.”

“Grayson is family.” She snapped. Still holding his hand she followed Jacob into the emergency department.

Jacob led her past a few curtained-off sections before stopping at the last one. They ducked behind the curtain and Sydney dropped Grayson’s hand and ran to the bed.

Emma, looking very small and pale, was lying in the bed with her left arm encased in a bright pink cast.

“Hi mama.” She said solemnly.

“Hi baby.” Sydney answered. She sat on the side of the bed and kissed Emma’s face before stroking her hair. “How are you feeling?”

“I hurt my arm.”

“I know you did. I’m sorry Emma.”

“It hurt a lot.” She sighed. “It feels better now.”

“The doctor gave her some meds for pain.” Jacob said.

Sydney glanced behind her. Monica, her face completely devoid of colour, was standing next to Jacob. He put his arm around her and she gave him a small, sick smile.

“How did it happen?” Sydney asked.

Jacob hesitated and Monica, wiping tears from her face, said softly, “It’s my fault Sydney. Emma wanted to try out the top bunk of her bed. I put her in there and then I – I left the room just for a minute and she tried to climb down by herself. She fell off the ladder.”

She swallowed back a sob. “I’m really sorry.”

“It’s fine Monica. Accidents happen.” Sydney replied gently.

“Am I going to your house now mama?” Emma asked.

“Not just yet baby.” Sydney replied.

“Actually,” Jacob sat down on the other side of Emma and rubbed her blanket-covered leg. “Maybe you should stay home this weekend Emma. With your sore arm it’s probably better if you stay with daddy and Monica.”

Sydney bit back a protest as her stomach twisted painfully. She had been so looking forward to having Emma to herself this weekend.

Emma stared at Jacob, her lower lip trembling. “I’m not going to mama’s?” She whispered.

“You will honey. Just not tomorrow.” Jacob said, giving her a small smile.

Emma burst into loud wailing and Jacob winced as Sydney tried to soothe her. “It’s okay baby girl, don’t cry.”

“I want to go to mama’s.” Emma sobbed. “You said I could go to mama’s house!” She started to cry harder and with a frantic look at Monica, Jacob rubbed Emma’s leg again.

“Okay sweetheart, okay. Don’t cry. You can go to your mama’s house tomorrow okay?”

She continued to cry. Emma was an easy child, not prone to temper tantrums or bouts of crying, and faced with the alien sound of her sobs Jacob could do nothing but continue to rub her leg helplessly.
